Sports cruises: six of the best

Formula One, F1, sport, sports cruises, cruise

Whether it’s a casual coastal walk or a golf extravaganza, there are itineraries to satisfy even the most sports-mad of cruisers. Gary Peters reports.

Street racer

Cruises that take in the Monaco Grand Prix are relatively well known and popular. However, despite all the excitement that Monte Carlo undoubtedly involves, the Singapore Grand Prix – Asia’s first street circuit –  is an exhilarating night race illuminated by the stunning backdrop of neck-aching skyscrapers. Combine a cruise and land holiday departing 11 September 2019 with two nights in Bali, a seven-night cruise on the Star Clipper cruise ship, and a three-night post-cruise stay in Singapore. Prices start from £3,489pp.

Cruise and walk

For more than 10 years, Ramblers Walking Holidays has organised cruise and walk holidays in partnership with Fred Olsen Cruise Lines. There are sailings to various destinations, from the Norwegian fjords to the Canary Islands to Indonesia, all designed to introduce travellers to the benefits of walking excursions – it doesn’t always have to be about high-octane sport. The 17-night Cape Town to the Seychelles trip departs 31 October 2019 on Boudicca. Prices start from £4,195pp.

Tee time

Sail the serene Danube with AmaWaterways and sample the line’s concierge golf programme, which includes a choice of excursions and up to five rounds of golf at some of the leading championship courses on the continent, such as Albatross Golf Club in Prague and Penati Country Club, Slovakia. This comprehensive package really does go the extra mile for those who dream of putting like a pro. Prices from £5,100pp for a 10-night golf and river cruise package, departing 15 August 2019 on AmaViola.

Bowled over by CMV

Cruise and Maritime Voyages is well known for its themed cruises and the Cricketing Legends itinerary is quite possibly one of the best. Guests are joined by some of the game’s leading names for a series of on-board lectures, giveaways and meet and greets. The next Cricketing Legends cruise to Norway departs from Tilbury on 3 November 2019. Prices start from £414pp.

The wide world of sports

While not a specific itinerary or sport, the Wide World of Sports deck, on Disney’s Disney Magic and Disney Wonder ships, is a smorgasbord of options, housing basketball courts, ping pong tables, shuffleboard and a running track. It’s a great place for cruisers of all ages, as well as those who simply want to watch others sweat it out on court while enjoying panoramic views of the ocean.

On your bike

Uniworld has partnered with tour operator Butterfield & Robinson to offer a series of cruise biking tours. Expert guides are on hand to advise guests, and bikes are available for use at no extra charge. Combining a river cruise with a cycling element is a great way for guests to really delve into the heart of a destination and provides a nice change of pace to an itinerary. The seven-night Rhone river cruise biking sailing departs 28 July 2019, on the SS Catherine. Prices start from approximately £6,000pp.
