P&O loses Adonia to new voluntourism cruise line

Adonia is leaving P&O Cruises next year to launch a new US-based cruise line dedicated to voluntourism for the firm’s parent company Carnival Corporation.

Called fathom, the line is aimed at people who want to give their time and skills to help those less well-off than themselves. Adonia will be based in Miami and cruise each week to Amber Cove, a new $85 million cruise port Carnival is opening in the Dominican Republic this year.

During two days at sea, passengers can learn skills such as how to teach English or cultivate seedlings; in Amber Cove they will have three days to put their new talents to use and enjoy the destination as any other cruise passenger. Prices start from $1,540 per person cruise-only including volunteer excursions.

Adonia, which holds just 710 passengers, will have a makeover next March to reflect the new ethos. Among changes, there’ll be low-key entertainment including Dominican movies and menus will include local specialties.
