MSC Cruises sets out sustainability focus for 2022 summer programme

MSC Cruises shore excursion sustainability

MSC Cruises has claimed that its summer 2022 programme of shore excursions will have its “strongest ever focus on minimising the environmental impact of land-based tours and supporting nature-positive activities”.

The line has pledged to use more electric and hybrid shuttle buses for guest transport from ports to places of interest in Denmark, Finland, Norway, Spain and Sweden, with MSC Cruises aiming to increase the use of green ground transportation in the future.

Low carbon footprint excursions will include 150 bicycle tours  in 21 countries and more sustainable shore excursions called ‘protectours’.

Examples include planting trees to replenish lost forests in the Greek island of Rhodes and collecting plastic waste from the beaches of the Adriatic Sea.

The summer 2022 shore excursion programme will total nearly 1,400 tours, the line’s largest offering to date.

MSC Cruises head of shore excursions Marialuisa Iaccarino said: “Travel and tourism has a very significant role to play in global decarbonisation and we need to demonstrate leadership by ensuring that we meet the expectation of travellers who are more aware and engaged in sustainability matters and the protection and enhancement of the natural environment.

“At MSC Cruises we are determined to prove that the industry is a positive and engaged player in driving sustainable tourism.”

In September 2021, MSC announced plans to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions in its cruise operations by 2050.

The target covers MSC Cruises and luxury brand Explora Journeys.

Guests who book any of the summer 2022 shore excursions will benefit from a discount of up to 20 per cent if booked in advance.
