Carnival Corporation’s philanthropic arm, Carnival Foundation, and its nine global cruise brands together with the Mickey and Madeleine Arison Family Foundation, have pledged the sum to go towards funding for hurricane relief efforts in the Bahamas.
Carnival has also asked employees and guests to join the hurricane Dorian relief effort by giving online tools and a donation programme at its US homeports as guests board their cruises.
Earlier this week, Carnival Pride and Carnival Liberty distributed food, water and other essential relief supplies to the people of Grand Bahama and Abaco islands.
According to reports, more than 2,841 tons of food and supplies were delivered by the corporation, having been collected from donations made in South Florida and other parts of the US.
During times of crisis, Carnival Foundation works closely with national and international relief organisations, coordinating corporate and employee donations for emergencies such as hurricanes in the US and Caribbean.
Other cruise lines including Royal Caribbean have also donated funds and supplies to the area.
Bahamian officials have expressed great appreciation for the support Carnival and its employees and guests have provided, but also stressed that the other parts of the Bahamas are open for business and stand ready to welcome guests.
Carnival Cruise Line has since resumed regular calls to the Bahamas and will make 41 port-of-call stops this month in Nassau, Half Moon Cay and Princess Cays.
Following Hurricane Dorian, more than 70,000 people have been made homeless in the Grand Bahama and the Abaco Islands, the parts of the Bahamas hardest hit by the hurricane, and at least 43 people were killed (with numbers expected to rise dramatically), according to CNN.
