CLIA has outlined a “strong first step” to cut cruise carbon emissions by 40 per cent by 2030.

Progress will be measured against a 2008 fleet baseline and emissions rates will be calculated based on the industry fleet’s total carbon emissions, ship berths and distance travelled.

The cruise body will also report annually on progress.

According to CLIA, the reduction will be helped by innovative technologies in ship design and propulsion, such as LNG-powered ships – of which there could be 25 by 2025.

CLIA cruise lines are also using advanced air quality systems that reduce ship exhaust emissions by up to 98 per cent.

Global CLIA chairman and president and CEO of Carnival Corporation, Arnold Donald, said: “Today’s announcement is a tribute to cross-industry collaboration and a shared commitment to environmental sustainability.

“We aspire to the International Maritime Organisation’s vision of a carbon-free shipping industry by the end of the century. Our 40 per cent commitment is a strong first step toward realising that vision.”
