AmaWaterways has christened its newest river cruise ship, AmaDouro, at a ceremony in Porto, Portugal.

Company co-founders Rudi Schreiner and Kristin Karst were joined by the ship’s godmother, Advantage Travel Partnership CEO Julia Lo Bue-Said, and other industry partners and media for the celebration.

AmaDouro – which features 51 staterooms, a Panoramic Lounge, heated Sun Deck swimming pool, fitness room and massage room – is the cruise line’s 21st in total and second to sail on the Douro, after AmaVida.

“The arrival of every new ship is exciting for us at AmaWaterways, but we are particularly thrilled to be adding AmaDouro to this spectacular region that we proudly helped introduce when sister ship AmaVida was first launched in 2013,” said Schreiner. “We are very happy to have our friends and partners join us here today as this 21st addition to our fleet marks the beginning of a banner year for our company.”

Schreiner’s comments were echoed by Karst, who added that the decision to have Lo Bue-Said as godmother was “our way of celebrating the incredible growth and our strong commitment to the UK travel agent community”.

Lo Bue-Said – who was onboard with her family for AmaDouro’s inaugural sailing in the days prior to the christening ceremony – explained she was “very proud to be godmother of this incredible ship”, adding: “AmaDouro has truly exceeded my expectations of river cruising, from the ship herself to the unparalleled guest service and curated shore excursions. Travelling through Portugal and welcoming this ship with my family has been an unforgettable experience.”

AmaDouro will be based in Porto and offer seven-night roundtrip Enticing Douro cruises with a three-night pre-cruise land programme in Lisbon.

It is the first of three new ships that will be added to the fleet this year, joining AmaMora, sister ship to AmaLea and AmaKristina, sailing on the Rhine, and the AmaMagna on the Danube.
