Viking has announced plans to expand its Egypt fleet with the launch of a new river cruise ship.

Viking Aton, built specifically to navigate the Nile, is scheduled to join the fleet in September 2022, building on the company’s existing Egypt fleet, which includes Viking Osiris – set to launch in 2021 and Viking Ra.

The 82-guest ship will feature all outside staterooms with river views, a pool and sun deck with 360-degree views, and the Aquavit Terrace for al fresco dining.

It will sail the 12-day Pharaohs & Pyramids voyages, which starts with a three-night stay in Cairo, where guests can visit sites such as the Great Pyramids of Giza and the necropolis of Sakkara. Guests then fly to Luxor, where they visit the Temples of Luxor and Karnak before an eight-day cruise on the Nile, featuring access to the tomb of Nefertari in the Valley of the Queens and the tomb of Tutankhamun in the Valley of the Kings.

The line’s chairman Torstein Hagen said: “Egypt remains a top destination for many of our guests who are inspired to discover the rich history and beauty of the region.

“We will always maintain our commitment to creating meaningful experiences that are focused on the destination. The addition of Viking Aton is a reflection of our continued investment in Egypt. We look forward to introducing the country’s cultural treasures to even more guests in the future.”

In November, Viking installed a Covid testing lab on the 930-guest Viking Star. The full-scale PCR laboratory can be used to test crew and passengers with a non-invasive saliva test.

The line has also made progress on the development of its expedition cruise arm with the float out of its first expedition ship in December 2020.
