Viking UK boss Wendy Atkin-Smith believes that the company’s new expedition arm is perfectly placed to take advantage of the growing desire for “comfortable” exploration.
Viking Expeditions will begin sailing in January 2022 with its first vessel, Viking Octantis, embarking on voyages to Antarctica and North America’s Great Lakes. The second ship, Viking Polaris, will make her debut in August 2022, sailing to Antarctica and the Arctic.
Speaking to Cruise Trade News at the Viking Expeditions launch in Los Angeles, Viking UK MD Wendy Atkin-Smith said: “Our guests are curious explorers. They want to continue travelling with Viking to familiar and iconic destinations, but they also want to travel further.
“We believe there is a gap in the market for expedition ships that harness all of the latest technology and cutting-edge design, but which are also extremely comfortable.
“The response from our past passengers and the number of bookings we have already received has been phenomenal, so this demonstrates the high level of demand for this type of cruising.”
Viking is predicting strong UK-based interest in the Great Lakes itinerary, as it takes in a “relatively undiscovered” area, alongside the wildlife-spotting opportunities in the Arctic and Antarctica.
An industry first
Viking Expeditions will also make a range of equipment to boost the guest experience. “Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris will include a fleet of zodiacs, a fleet of two-seater kayaks and two 12-seater convertible RIBs,” added Atkin-Smith.
“Each ship will also feature two six-guest submarines that feature revolving seats and 270-degree spherical windows. Most of these experiences are included for all guests. The on-board expedition programme is designed to prepare guests for their onshore experiences, with more than 25 experts accompanying each journey.
“One of the design features we are particularly excited about is the Hangar – an industry first. It is like an enclosed marina, which means that guests can embark on the RIBs inside the ship itself where they will be protected from the elements. The RIBs then enter the water via a slipway.”
The line also has the option for additional expedition ships, but the focus for now, said Atkin-Smith, is on river and ship launches – seven river ships in 2020 and a new ocean vessel, Viking Venus, in 2021.
