Royal Caribbean has revealed that in 2020 it will redeploy Independence of the Seas away from the UK market.

The ship – which was due to sail from Southampton on European itineraries from May 2020 – will instead sail from Fort Lauderdale on Caribbean itineraries and will visit the line’s private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay.

The line’s UK & Ireland AVP and MD Ben Bouldin said guests affected by the change will be offered full refunds and a ‘Future Cruise Credit’ – valued at 25 per cent of the cruise fare paid on the cancelled sailing – for use on alternative sailings.

He also added that Quantum-class ship Anthem of the Seas will return to the UK market for 2020, adding more options for guests sailing from Southampton.

On its website, the line stated: “Our goal is provide our guests with the best itineraries that take you to exclusive parts of the world and [we] have decided to make these changes for the 2020 season to maximise our capacity in the Caribbean. We are terribly sorry. We know this news is disappointing. We do hope you find an alternate vacation option with us.”

The news has sparked plenty of reaction on social media, with many cruisers expressing frustration at the cancellation of itineraries. As for travel agents, Royal Caribbean has stated that it will honour commissions on cancelled sailings.
