Additional screenings, fewer passengers on board, automation at check-in and enhanced social distancing measures could be all part of the new cruising norm when sailings resume after the Covid-19 outbreak, according to Royal Caribbean’s Ben Bouldin.
Speaking at the cruise line’s webinar for trade this morning, vice president EMEA Ben Bouldin discussed how Royal Caribbean, along with other cruise lines, is looking closely at new health and safety measures following the coronavirus pandemic and is working “hand in hand” with the Government and CLIA.
Bouldin believes cruise lines will have to reassess procedures before ships return to service and look closely at social distancing measures and how these will impact public spaces on cruise ships, particularly dining rooms and pool areas.
Bouldin said: “Until there’s a vaccine, we’re trying to understand what the new normal is. Things will be really different.
“It’s incredibly complex. We have to get the right balance of accommodating changes to make sure everyone is safe, while not undermining our guests’ enjoyment of their holiday.
He added: “It’s not an easy balance, but when we go achieve it, we will shout about it.”
Bouldin also dispelled claims that guests over 70 or with underlying health conditions would need a note from their doctor permitting them to sail, highlighting how this had been confirmed by leading cruise body CLIA.
He said: “I hope we will be able to continue to support guests with all sorts of disabilities and have the capability to do so. Our intention is to remain an inclusive holiday opportunity for as many people as possible so hopefully, those fears can be overcome.”
Once these health and safety measures have been put in place, Bouldin stressed how the cruise industry is going to have to become “more vocal and more proactive about the protocols we have in place for health and safety” in order to restore customers’ faith and trust in the sector.
He said: “We are going to have to shout from the rooftops to make sure people hear it.”
