Cruise specialist cruise.co.uk has reported a three-fold increase in river cruise bookings since the start of the year, compared to 2019.
The agency spoke to 1,200 of its customers, revealing that the most popular destination is the Rhine.
In addition, prior to 2020, just over half of those asked had sailed on or considered a river cruise. That figure has now increased to 83 per cent.
The ideal destination for those planning a future river cruise is the Danube, as voted for by 29 per cent of respondents. The Rhine is set to remain popular, as it received 25 per cent of the vote, followed by the Douro on 15 per cent.
River cruise a ‘fantastic option’
Cruise.co.uk deputy managing director Tony Andrews said: “The advantages of sailing on a river cruise have unquestionably led to a steep increase in demand, with UK guests now much more likely to consider smaller ships for their holidays.
“With fewer people on board and the opportunity to travel right into the heart of multiple eye-catching destinations, river cruises are a fantastic option. We’re anticipating their popularity will continue to grow with UK holidaymakers this year and beyond.”
Back in February, another survey from cruise.co.uk showed that almost three-quarters of people who sailed on a cruise last year had booked at least one itinerary for 2022.
Speaking at the time, Andrews said: “The success of last year’s round Britain season means we are seeing demand from both seasoned cruisers as well as guests who sailed for the first time.
“As testing restrictions are increasingly lifted, we’re confident holidaymakers will continue to choose cruise.”
