Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings boss Frank Del Rio to retire

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH) president and chief executive Frank Del Rio has announced his retirement following 30 years in the cruise industry.

Del Rio will be succeeded by Harry Sommer, currently president and chief executive of Norwegian Cruise Line, effective from 1 July 2023.

Sommer will in turn be succeeded by David Herrera, who has been chief consumer sales and marketing officer of NCL since 2021.

Del Rio – who will serve in a consultant capacity as a senior advisor to the board through to 2025 – has led the company since 2015 and prior to that led Prestige Cruise International.

He founded Oceania Cruises in 2002 and has been credited with creating a new upper premium market space in the cruise industry.

During his tenure, Del Rio was at the helm for eight ship launches and a second private island destination at Harvest Caye.

Leading Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings a ‘rewarding experience’

NCLH chairman of the board of directors Russell Galbut said: “On behalf of the board and the entire organisation, I thank Frank for his invaluable contributions to this company and the cruise industry throughout the last 30 years.

“He has delivered superior financial results, expanded our fleet with luxurious and innovative ships, strengthened our global footprint and delivered unparalleled experiences for our guests.

“His passion and dedication will have a lasting impact on both our business and the industry at large.”

Del Rio said: “Leading Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my professional career.

“My heartfelt gratitude goes out to our 39,000 team members around the globe whose innovation, tenacity and collaboration have strengthened this company and built the industry’s most passionate and loyal base of cruisers.”

Regarding his transition to NCLH president, Sommer added: “I am incredibly humbled to succeed Frank as this iconic company’s next president and CEO.

“I’m grateful to have the unwavering support of him and the board to lead the company as we embark on the next chapter for our storied brands.”
