NCLH to donate up to $100,000 to Hurricane Melissa relief efforts
Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH) will donate up to $100,000 to support relief efforts following the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa
The company has already donated $50,000 to the American Red Cross and will match up to an additional $50,000 in both employee and public contributions. The funds will be used where they are needed most in coordination with the global Red Cross network.
“Our thoughts are with everyone impacted by Hurricane Melissa,” said Harry Sommer, president and chief executive officer of NCLH. “The Caribbean region holds a special place in our hearts, and it’s important that we stand with our communities in times of need.
“Through our Sail & Sustain programme, we’re proud to support the American Red Cross in delivering vital relief and helping families recover.”
The donation is part of NCLH’s global sustainability programme, Sail & Sustain, and builds on its Strengthening Communities mission, which aims at supporting the communities where it operates.
“We are deeply grateful to Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings for their generous support of Hurricane Melissa,” said Krista Coletti, American Red Cross regional CEO. “This contribution will help communities impacted by Hurricane Melissa.”
It comes after the Category 5 storm swept across Jamaica and the surrounding region over a number of days, leaving behind a trail of destruction and dozens of people dead. In Haiti, at least 31 people were killed, while Cuba also saw flooding and landslides.
On Sunday (2 November), the BBC reported that a flight chartered by the UK government to evacuate British nationals from the area landed at Gatwick Airport.
