Luxury cabins, show-stopping entertainment and spacious common areas are driving passengers to book holidays onboard new cruise ships, a new study has found

The survey is timely as nearly 40 ocean and river cruise ships are set to make their maiden voyage this year. These include Royal Caribbean International’s Star of the Seas, Virgin Voyages’ Brilliant Lady, MSC World America, Princess Cruises’ Star Princess and Disney Destiny.

Online cruise specialist cruise.co.uk. surveyed 1,200 customers to find out what makes them want to sail on the latest ships.

The results showed that cruise travellers are lured by new ships boasting upgraded cabins, larger public spaces, and standout entertainment.

Extra perks like waterparks and bragging rights barely made waves, attracting only 10 per cent and 2 per cent of travellers respectively. About 15 per cent pledged their loyalty to their favourite cruise line whereas 85 per cent were willing to explore different cruise operators to experience something new.

Managing director of cruise.co.uk, Tony Andrews said: “It’s clear that travellers are drawn to the added comfort and luxury experiences that newer ships can bring. Extra space, enhanced cabins and improved facilities evidently make a difference when passengers are planning a holiday at sea.”

He continued: “Loyalty to cruise lines doesn’t necessarily dictate where customers will book. People want the best value and experience for their money, and they’re open to shopping around to get it.”
