Hurtigruten’s newly refurbished MS Vesteralen returns to service

MS Vesteralen

Hurtigruten has relaunced MS Vesteralen following an extensive renovation

The ship, which is the smallest in the line’s fleet with capacity for 490 passengers in 133 cabins, has returned to service following a refurbishment which took place from March 2025 and June 2026.

Public areas and 100 cabins have been refreshed while new cabin types Arctic Superior and Mini Suites have been introduced.

MS Vesteralen is now sailing year-round on Hurtigruten’s 12-day Original Coastal Express route between Bergen and Kirkenes.

Hedda Felin, Hurtigruten chief executive, said: “With MS Vesteralen back in service, it is not just a ship being put back into operation, it is living history with strong traditions being given a new life.

Vesteralen offers a completely unique travel experience, both for those living on the Norwegian coast and tourists.”

André Pettersen, chief product and hotel operations officer, said: “The changes have been very well received by guests who have been on board for the first sailings.

“Many highlight the special atmosphere on board and the combination of historical details and modern comfort. This confirms that we have succeeded in preserving Vesteralen’s unique character while elevating the experience to today’s standard.”

This month, Hurtigruten appointed Chris Barker as key account manager tasked with working with the line’s sales teams to support trade partners, grow key accounts, enhance agent engagement and develop new opportunities across both the UK and emerging market regions.
