The first British man who became infected with coronavirus (Covid-19) while in quarantine on the Diamond Princess cruise ship has died in Japan, according to Japan’s health ministry.

The deceased man, along with four other Britons, had to remain in Japan after approximately 70 other passengers on Diamond Princess tested negative for the virus and were repatriated to the UK last week. The identity of the man has not yet been confirmed.

The ship was put under quarantine on 19 February and passengers were stuck on board for more than two weeks as they were tested for coronavirus. A total of 705 passengers and crew on board Diamond Princess tested positive with Covid-19.

The news comes as two more cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in the UK. The total number of cases in the UK now stands at 19 after Wales declared its first case this morning, along with two others who tested positive in England after picking up the virus in Iran.

Earlier this week, ABTA released its updated travel advice statement, following the outbreaks in Europe.

“UK health authorities are providing detailed advice for specific destinations and locations,” it read. “Travellers are advised to read the FCO travel advice for the country they are travelling to, which includes entry requirements and a link through to the National Travel Health Network and Centre (NaTHNaC) TravelHealthPro website that provides specific travel health advice for countries.”

ABTA has also released a Q&A on travel insurance implications.
