Earlier in September, Avalon Waterways revealed it will launch a new-build ship on the Douro in 2024. The line’s UK sales and marketing director Janet Parton joins Lucy Abbott in the Cruise Corner to explain why this is such an important development.

The introduction of the 102-guest Avalon Alegria will mark Avalon Waterways’ debut on the Douro.

As with other ships in the fleet, it will feature Panorama Suites (37 in total), as well as 14 Deluxe Staterooms, as well as a pool.

The ship will sail a new eight-day cruise that begins and ends in Porto, featuring the line’s Classic, Discovery and Active shore excursions.

At the time, Parton said the company “couldn’t be more excited”. Find out why in the interview below.
