Arctic keeps momentum despite new regulations, says ECN CEO

Expedition Cruise Network, ECN

The Arctic has maintained strong booking momentum in 2025 despite a raft of new regulations, according to the Expedition Cruise Network (ECN)

It comes after new rules were introduced to protect wildlife and fragile environments in the area. Earlier this year, the Norwegian government limited the number of passengers ships could carry to 200 when sailing near Svalbard and national parks.

A minimum distance of 500 meters must also be maintained from polar bears, with no disturbance or active seeking or luring allowed.

Akvile Marozaite, CEO of the ECN, said: “As the 2025 Arctic season draws to a close, it is clear this popular expedition cruise destination continues to deliver extraordinary experiences and has maintained strong momentum – despite having navigated a raft of new regulations.

“To support travel advisors in selling with confidence and showcasing the region’s multifaceted beauty and appeal, the Expedition Cruise Network has published a dedicated selling guide for Arctic expedition cruises.”

The two new training products have been introduced by the ECN to boost travel trade professionals’ competitive edge to grow sales and expertise of the Arctic.

ECN’s third selling guide: The ECN Arctic Selling Guide, provides insight into the polar region that launched expedition cruising over a century ago and a new behind the scenes interview series lifts the lid on how itineraries to some of the most remote regions of the world are put together.

The programme of live online interviews takes advisors inside the operation and guest experience of expedition cruise lines, enabling them to develop confidence and credibility with clients.
