AmaWaterways christens AmaMagdalena in Columbia

AmaWaterways AmaMagdalena

AmaWaterways celebrated the official christening of AmaMagdalena on Tuesday (17 June), in Mompox, Columbia

The event for AmaMagdalena, which is the first luxury river cruise ship to navigate the Magdalena River, was attended by local dignitaries, including the governor of the Bolívar department and the mayor of Mompox, and representatives from ProColombia.

“Today’s christening ceremony in Mompox marks a powerful moment not just for AmaWaterways, but for the future of river cruising,” said Rudi Schreiner, co-founder and CEO of AmaWaterways.

“AmaMagdalena represents years of collaboration, vision and trust between our team and our Colombian partners. By opening the Magdalena River to luxury river cruising, we are laying the foundation for sustainable tourism that will benefit travellers and local communities alike for generations to come.”

Interior designer and Columbina entrepreneur Marianna Schlegel Donado will serve as godmother. She played a key role in the ship’s design, and helped promote Columbian design on the international scale through her infusion of locally inspired craftsmanship.

The ship’s design was inspired by the “natural beauty and vibrant culture” of the region, led by architect Camilo Restrepo. With only 60 guests onboard, travellers will enjoy a sun deck pool, a fitness room, a main restaurant serving locally inspired Latin American cuisine alongside Western favourites, and an al fresco specialty dining experience.

The ship offers two seven-night itineraries, Magic of Columbia and Wonders of Columbia, sailing between Cartagena and Barranquilla. Excursions include a celebration of the Barranquilla Carnival, a jazz performance in Mompox, birdwatching expeditions, and a visit to the first free town in the Americas, Palenque.

Later in the year, AmaWaterways will extend its Columbian influence with a second ship, AmaMelodia.
