Silversea Cruises to convert Silver Wind to ice-class ship

Silversea Cruises has released its largest-ever programme with more than 280 new itineraries for 2023/2024

Silversea has revealed it is to convert Silver Wind into an ice-class, ultra-luxury expedition ship.

The line said in a statement that the decision “signals continued confidence in the fast-growing popularity of ultra-luxury expedition travel”.

Silver Wind is currently undergoing refurbishment work at the Remontowa shipyard in Gdańsk, Poland, following a major upgrade in 2018. The redesign includes an ice-strengthened hull for cruising in polar waters and technology upgrades.

The ship will feature a reduced guest capacity of 274, with space for 28 expedition experts, 24 zodiacs and 14 kayaks. It will also be outfitted with a new advanced wastewater treatment plant, food waste treatment facilities, and new fuel-saving boilers.

Once works have been finished it will emerge as the line’s fourth expedition vessel in its fleet of nine ultra-luxury ships.

Silver Wind is scheduled to depart on its maiden voyage on 20 November 2021 on a 22-day journey to Antarctica.

Silversea president and CEO Roberto Martinoli said: “We are converting our beloved Silver Wind into one of the most luxurious expedition ships at sea to further expand and diversify our cold-water cruise offering.

“With the backing of the Royal Caribbean Group, we are significantly investing in our ultra-luxury fleet to meet the burgeoning guest demand for voyage options in such breathtaking, remote destinations as Antarctica, and we have more exciting enhancements to come.”

Silversea added that Silver Wind’s upper suites will be refurbished, with new furniture and carpets, as well as new walk-in showers to complement the bathtubs. The vista and veranda suites will also be updated.

In addition, Silver Wind will feature a new photo studio (formerly the casino) with state-of-the-art equipment, a Mudroom and a special water heating system in the ship’s swimming pool.

Another ship in the fleet, Silver Muse, is scheduled to sail to Alaska from 29 July, for a series of 10 and 11-day itineraries.
