Sally Gunnell: ‘I’m proud to be a part of ROL Cruise’

ROL Cruise Sally Gunnell

Olympic gold medallist Sally Gunnell reflects on her glittering career and looks ahead to her new role as Cruise Miles Ambassador for ROL Cruise

What does it mean to you to be named ROL Cruise Miles Ambassador?

“I’m genuinely so chuffed. It brings together two things I care deeply about: travel and wellbeing. ROL Cruise is all about comfort, care and helping people see the world in a way that suits them. That’s something I’m proud to be part of. I’m excited to share everything from tips to inspiration – especially around wellness at sea, balanced living and finding joy in the journey. There are so many hidden places and wonderful moments on board that people don’t always expect. I want to help others discover those.”

You’ve travelled the world through sport – are there any cruise destinations that overlap with your competition history?

“Definitely. Tokyo is one. I was sponsored by a Japanese brand and competed there a lot. Returning to places like that as a traveller gives you a whole new perspective. Barcelona is another, obviously. Barcelona will also always be close to my heart. I won Olympic gold there, celebrated my 50th birthday there, and we often sail from there. I love the food, the atmosphere – it has everything.”

You’re a cruise ship godmother – what does that mean to you?

“Being named as Ambience’s godmother was such an honour, and it was a truly special day. It felt like a beautiful link between my love of travel and this new chapter in my life. I’ve sailed with Cunard, Celebrity Cruises, Royal Caribbean International and others. They each have their strengths. Cunard is all about classic luxury. Celebrity Cruises felt beautifully designed and had incredible food. Royal Caribbean International had some of the best entertainment I’ve ever seen – genuinely West-End worthy!”

Are there any lessons from your sporting career that you’ve carried with you into this next chapter?

“Absolutely. Sport gave me a deep love of travel and the confidence to embrace the unknown. At 16, I was flying off to faraway places, often alone, and that really shaped me. It also taught me to get comfortable with discomfort. I don’t need the same level of challenge these days, but I still love that buzz of discovery.”

For those who may not know you beyond your sporting career, how would you describe yourself?

“I’m a mum to three boys, a dog lover, and someone who genuinely enjoys the peace of nature. These days, I’m passionate about making people feel good about themselves. After retiring from athletics, I had to redefine who I was, and wellness has become a huge part of that journey. For me, it’s all about balance, purpose and helping others find joy in their everyday lives.”
