Royal Caribbean has said it is “overjoyed” with the response to its appeal for volunteers to take part in trial cruises.
The project was first announced in a trade webinar at the start of November, following on from the new guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Since then more than 100,000 have registered to take part.
As yet Royal Caribbean has not provided any information on when the cruises will depart or from what port.
In a Facebook post on 12 November, Royal Caribbean International president and CEO Michael Bayley said: “We will be operating trial sailings with volunteer guests. It has been so gratifying to receive literally thousands of emails and calls offering to volunteer.”
In a statement the line added: “Royal Caribbean has some of the most loyal guests in the cruise industry, and we have been overjoyed with their interest to take part in our simulated trial sailings. This week alone [week ending 13 November], we have received more than 5,000 emails, not including the tweets, comments and messages across social media.
“We have a lot of details to work out to make sure everyone’s experience on board is as safe and as enjoyable as we can make it. So, while we currently have no dates to announce yet we are excited about the interest we have received so far. We can’t wait to finally welcome our guests back on board.
‘While we review the requirements proposed by the CDC and consider when we can host our simulated trial sailings, we are gathering information from those who have shown interest on our Facebook group and will be in touch with them when we have more details.
“Our priority is to ensure that we can exercise our comprehensive set of measures in a safe and healthy manner while making sure we provide a memorable vacation experience.”
