About Florence
On any western Mediterranean cruise, Florence, reached from the port in Livorno, is an absolute highlight. The capital of Italy’s Tuscany region is a feast for the eyes at every turn and it’s not surprising when you learn the entire city centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Home to masterpieces of Renaissance art and architecture, in the 15th century artistic greats such as Giotto, Ghiberti, Brunelleschi and Michelangelo worked in Florence and produced paintings and sculptures that can be seen today in grand squares, churches and museums such as the Uffizi Gallery and Accademia, the latter home to Michelangelo’s David.
A landmark sight is the Duomo cathedral with a tiled dome designed by Brunelleschi and a bell tower by Giotto.
