‘Cruise revival starts with innovation and technology’

Technology in the cruise sector

Wayne Lloyd, CEO of TraceSafe, a contact tracing and real-time location software company, explains why wearable technology has a key part to play in the return of the cruise sector.

Cruising is a fan favourite for travellers looking to relax and visit multiple destinations in one trip. An industry that saw a 5.4 per cent year-on-year growth rate from 2005 to 2019 came to a devastating halt when Covid-19 hit.

However, there are opportunities to revive the cruise industry and make it better and more innovative than before. A successful restart will not only bring back jobs, but also kickstart the economy, allowing people to enjoy traveling again with peace of mind.

The industry demands a degree of technology excellence and we’ve been working closely with industry leaders to establish the best protocols to get ships sailing again.

Wearable technology in the cruise sector
Wearable technology is seen as a way to improve the guest experience.

Wearables for guests and crew

Earlier this year, we announced a partnership with Tritan Software Corporation, which provides health information and incident management software platforms.

Tritan currently works with many cruise lines, including Celebrity Cruises, Crystal Cruises, Holland America Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, and Viking, to name a few.

Through this partnership, TraceSafe’s contract tracing software and wearable devices will support Tritan’s health management programme – known as SeaCare – which is a complete enterprise software solution for global medical operations in the maritime industry.

By using privacy-centric software, medical grade security and encryption, it is possible to meet stringent privacy and medical requirements on cruise ships and the regions they visit.

We believe the future of the cruise industry begins with utilising wearable technology. For passengers, wearables can be used to process payments and earn rewards, while for staff, the technology can optimise workflow while on board. We’re passionate about playing our part in reviving cruise and are looking forward to setting sail in the near future.
