Cruise lines extend cancellations into summer as restart plans take shape

Thorne Travel, Shona Thorne

A number of major cruise lines have announced new sailing suspensions.

Holland America Line, Princess Cruises and Seabourn have all modified their plans, while the Royal Caribbean Group has also cancelled a series of voyages across its brands.

HAL’s new suspension includes European departures up to 30 June 2021, impacting itineraries scheduled to take place in May and June on Nieuw Statendam, Volendam and Westerdam.

Guests currently booked on the cancelled departures will be able to rebook on an equivalent cruise in 2022 at the 2021 fare.

Princess has extended its pause of  holidays sailing the Caribbean, California Coast, Mexico and Mediterranean through to 30 June 2021. The move affects itineraries on Caribbean Princess, Enchanted Princess and Ruby Princess.

For guests booked on a cancelled voyage, Princess will offer to move guests to the equivalent cruise in 2022, and where there is no matched cruise available, guests will automatically receive a refundable future cruise credit equivalent to 100 per cent of the fare paid.

Meanwhile, Seabourn has confirmed it has cancelled select 2021 European voyages. The announcement applies as follows:

  • Seabourn Sojourn – next scheduled departure is 3 July 2021
  • Seabourn Encore – next scheduled departure is 3 July 2021
  • Seabourn Ovation – next scheduled departure is 3 July 2021
  • Seabourn Quest – next scheduled departure is 7 November 2021

Guests have until 15 April 2021 to request to be rebooked to a comparable 2022 voyage at the 2021 rate. Guests can also request a bonus future cruise credit offer or a full refund.

Royal Caribbean Group

Royal Caribbean Group said it was working closely with the US CDC and government authorities worldwide as it prepares to resume operations, and therefore has extended “the suspension of certain sailings for our cruise lines”.

The following schedule reflects adjustments to 2021 itineraries:

Royal Caribbean International:

  • Sailings suspended through to 31 May
  • Excluding Quantum of the Seas and Odyssey of the Seas
  • Excluding China Spectrum of the Seas and Voyager of the Seas sailings from 30 April through May and beyond

Celebrity Cruises & Silversea

  • Sailings suspended through to 31 May

Azamara

  • Sailings suspended through to 30 June

The group said it was “reaching out to our guests and travel partners to share further details and address any questions or concerns”.
