River cruise lines reassure agents as they ‘continuously monitor’ low water levels

River cruise lines have reassured agents they are “continuously monitoring” low water levels on European rivers and will “proactively communicate” any itinerary changes

Heatwaves across Europe have caused “unusually low” water levels, with the Danube in Romania reaching its lowest point since 1996.

River cruise lines have assured agents and customers they have contingency plans in place if water levels drop so low their ships cannot pass through safely.

A spokesperson for Uniworld Boutique River Cruises said its sailings in France, Italy and Portugal are operating as scheduled and it is proactively monitoring any changes.

“Uniworld Boutique River Cruises continuously monitors river conditions and, when necessary, may make operational adjustments to select ships on the Rhine and Danube in response to evolving water levels,” they said.

“These adjustments may include itinerary modifications or alternative travel arrangements to help guests continue experiencing the destinations and exceptional service they expect from Uniworld.

“Sailings in France, Italy and Portugal are operating as scheduled, and Uniworld is proactively communicating with travel partners and guests whose itineraries may be affected.”

Riviera Travel said the “unusually low water levels are presenting operational challenges for the entire river cruise industry,” but the line is “uniquely prepared” to navigate conditions due to its 40 years of experience.

A spokesperson said the line is acting quickly to find “creative, seamless solutions” for any customers on impacted sailings.

James Golding, chief guest experience officer, said: “When nature presents unexpected challenges, our focus is simply on doing the right thing for our guests.

“With four decades of experience behind us, our teams know these rivers inside out, but what really sets us apart is the care and dedication of our people.

“From our UK office team flying out to support our vessels to our brilliant ship captains, cruise directors, hosts, and onboard crews, everyone is pulling together to ensure our guests can relax and enjoy a fantastic holiday, even when we have to adapt our plans.”

Viking confirmed some of its itineraries may be modified as a result of the low water levels and said agents will be notified directly by Viking Guest Services if their sailings are affected.

It also said it may be able to ship swap to ensure customers can continue their cruises.

“Viking has extensive experience managing variable river conditions in Europe,” a spokesperson said. “We are the largest river line—with a fleet of ships that we own and operate—and our Switzerland-based nautical team works in coordination with local authorities and port partners to monitor water levels and implement operational adjustments as needed.

“In addition, Viking strategically deploys sister ships on the same itineraries in opposite directions. When river conditions require it, Viking may implement a ship swap, allowing guests and their luggage to transfer to their exact same stateroom on an identical sister ship positioned on the other side of the affected section of river. This approach helps preserve itineraries and reduce disruptions to the guest experience.

“These advantages allow Viking to minimise the impact that water levels can have on an itinerary, which means our guests are better able to focus on enjoying themselves and having a great journey, rather than worrying about potential changes or cancellations.”

VIVA Cruises also confirmed it is putting contingency plans in place to protect passengers and their holidays.

A spokesperson said: “Like other river cruise operators, we have been affected by low water levels. We are implementing contingency plans, including the use of alternative vessels within the operating network of our owner Scylla, to ensure guests can enjoy their holidays with minimal disruption. The onboard VIVA Cruises experience remains unchanged, including our all-inclusive offering, dining, entertainment and shore excursion programme.

“We’re grateful to our guests and trade partners for their understanding and positive response to the measures we’ve put in place.

“We plan our itineraries with seasonal river conditions in mind, which helps us minimise disruption and operate successfully. We will continue to monitor conditions closely.”
